“Dax, where are we going?” Rori whines behind me.

I power through the woods, listening to her panting behind me and rolling my eyes at her lack of fitness. The girl still occupies the gym every day and I’m beginning to question what she’s actually doing in there considering she’s been huffing and puffing behind me for the last ten minutes now.

I grab her hand and slow my pace a little but still keep her in the dark.

Approaching the run-down building hidden in the trees, I knock on the door in three quick raps, followed by two slow ones, and shortly after, Emerson opens the door, a smile on his face in greeting.

I shuffle us both through the doorway, letting him close it behind us. The room is just as dirty and abandoned as always. Me and Emerson have been using the dilapidated building as a meeting point when we’re trying to be inconspicuous. A month after Emerson’s phone call to say he saw King and Puck in the prison building, we’ve finally found a time to meet to go through a plan.

“Emerson, this is Rori,” I introduce the pair and Emerson grins, putting a hand out in front of him.

“Ahh, the girl.” He winks and I see Rori’s shoulders relax. She timidly puts her hand in his and shakes it, a smile on her face.

“Emerson, how are we doing this? I need King out of there now,” I plead, desperate to hear this plan of his.

“Dax, I can’t do anything now, but we’re going back in a month. Kennedy has an inmate in there he’s determined to piss off. I know another month isn’t ideal, but it’s the best I’ve got.”

I nod, irritated, but at least it’s something.

“Okay, okay, but how are we going to get them out?”

“Well, I obviously can’t go in and just unlock their cell, but I can deliver them something. Write a letter King will know is from you. I can give it to him and then there’s some form of communication. He’ll know you’re trying to get him out and that’s a start.”

“But that’s not going to get him out. A fucking letter, Em? Really? That’s your plan?”

“Look, mate, it’s the best I’ve got so far. At least he’s still fucking alive right now,” he argues back and as I go to open my mouth, Rori’s voice stops me.

“Wait,” she says a few times, catching up with our conversation. “You’re, you, you know where King and Puck are?” she questions, looking at Emerson, and he turns his head between the both of us before settling on her.

“Yes.”

“Oh,” she just says and then closes her mouth.

“What?” Emerson questions back, eyes narrowed and one eyebrow raised slightly.

“Nothing,” she responds and he takes a step closer to her, but I step a fraction more in front of her.

“Emerson,” I warn and he looks at me.

He’s quiet, looking at Rori from over my shoulder, unease written all over his body language. What is his problem?

“Write me the letter, get it to me by next month, and I’ll deliver it.
